Brief Profile: Gilbert Sebastian is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations & Politics at the Central University of Kerala. He completed the ICSSR Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram focusing on land issues in the big plantations in Kerala state. Formerly, he has held the positions of Associate Fellow and Consultant at Council for Social Development, New Delhi and Research Associate, Developing Countries Research Centre (dcrc), University of Delhi. He holds doctorate and M.Phil. from Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His Ph.D. thesis was titled, ‘Class, Nationality and the Development Process in Keralam (Since 1970)’. His M.Phil. dissertation was titled, ‘The Role of Narayana Guru in Kerala Society (1888-1928): A Contextual Analysis’. He is a co-author of the book, Weapon of the Oppressed: An Inventory of People’s Rights in India, Daanish Books, Delhi, 2011 along with Manoranjan Mohanty, et al. He has also published articles in Economic & Political Weekly, Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Mainstream, etc. He has presented many papers in all-India and international conferences, including one at Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford. His special areas of research interest are: Political Economy of Development, Kerala Studies, People’s Rights, and People’s Movements. His fields of teaching interest in Political Studies are: Political Theory, Indian Politics, Comparative Political Analysis, etc.
