|Brief Profile:||Dr. S. Anbazhagi previously served as DST Young Scientist Fellow and executed her project in DRDO-Bharathiar University Center for Life Sciences. Dr. Anbazhagi holds a doctorate degree in Environmental Biotechnology from National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Chennai Zonal Laboratory, CSIR, India. She detected Norovirus strain for the first time in India in sewage sample, seawater, stools as well as seafood. Before her doctoral degree she served as a Project Assistant at CSIR- NEERI, Chennai Zonal Laboratory, Chennai, India, where she was responsible for the virological, bacteriological and biological analysis of water samples of various funding agencies such as DBT, DST, ICMR and Hindustan Lever Limited. She has also performed the biological analysis of the water samples (Phytoplankton and Zooplankton) of various Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Quality Assessment projects.
Dr. Anbazhagi an expert in molecular biology of environmental pathogens (viruses, bacteria and protozoa), has authored several manuscripts. Dr. Anbazhagi along with Dr. Muthukumar Muthuchamy developed a novel ozonation method to inactivate foodborne pathogens before it reaches Consumer end and suggested the same for food industries. Dr. Anbazhagi has been an environmental microbiologist, food microbiologist for the last 11 years and has deep expertise in concentration, isolation, detection and inactivation of environmental pathogens.
Dr. Anbazhagi has completed M.S. in Ecology from Salim Ali School of Ecology, Pondicherry Central University. She holds a Post Graduate diploma in Marine Environmental Pollution and Management and Nano-biotechnology. She has an International certification in HACCP from Rutgers University, USA. She is the recipient of several awards including UGC-NET, CSIR- Project Fellow, CSIR-SRF, DST International Travel Grant, ICMR Travel Grant, DST Young Scientist Fellow, UGC Post Doctoral Fellowship for Women. She is also a regional level as well as state level winner of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board Elocution Competition. Presently she is executing a DST funded Project where she designs an UV LED disinfection module for the simultaneous inactivation of foodborne pathogens as well as shelf life extension of fresh produce. Her future research interest involves the development of a water and health laboratory that deals with the rapid isolation, identification and inactivation methods for environmental pathogens as well as for the development of Bionanosensors for rapid detection of pathogens.
