Kasaragod: The Central University of Kerala (CUK) celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at its Periye Campus on Saturday. Vice Chancellor Prof. Siddu P. Algur hoisted the National Flag at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhawan and delivered the Independence Day address.
In his address, Prof. Algur said that a nation is measured not only by the freedom it has secured, but also by the future it creates through knowledge, innovation, compassion and service. Recalling the sacrifices of the freedom fighters, he urged everyone to renew their commitment to the progress and well-being of the nation.
Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047, he highlighted the vital role of universities in nurturing talent, generating knowledge, promoting innovation and preparing young people for lives of responsibility and service. He noted that CUK’s diverse campus, with students from different States and Union Territories, reflects India’s cherished ideal of unity in diversity.
The Vice Chancellor said that, guided by the National Education Policy 2020, the University is strengthening multidisciplinary education, research and innovation while introducing programmes aligned with emerging national priorities and regional development needs. He emphasised the need for research to address pressing societal challenges, particularly in areas such as climate resilience, environmental sustainability, public health, clean energy, water scarcity, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and advanced technologies.
“Our research should not remain confined to laboratories and publications. It should address real challenges faced by society. When research improves lives, it truly fulfils its purpose,” Prof. Algur said.
Addressing the students, he described them as the greatest strength of the University and the future of the nation. He urged them to learn with curiosity, question with courage and lead with humility, while actively participating in innovation, entrepreneurship, sports, cultural activities, environmental campaigns and community outreach programmes. Concluding his address, Prof. Algur said that freedom is not merely a cherished legacy but also a shared responsibility.
