An exhibition and seminar commemorating the struggle of tribal people in the history of freedom struggle were held at the Central University of Kerala. The program was organised under the auspices of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) in collaboration with Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof.H. Venkateshwarlu inaugurated the programme. The biographies of more than 60 heroes of various tribes like Thalakal Chanthu, Birsa Munda, Rani Ma Gaidinliu, Komaram Bheem etc. were featured in the exhibition.
In the seminar that followed, Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram All India Joint Organizing Secretary Sandeep Kaviswar delivered the keynote speech. He pointed out that the struggle of tribals for independence was a bright chapter in history. There was tribal resistance against the invading forces in all parts of the country. Though many people were killed and some tribes were massacred, not many heroes and heroines were recognized. It is the responsibility of society to pass the tales of tribals during the independence struggle on to the new generation, he added. Abhinav Prakash, Assistant Private Secretary to NCST Chairperson was the Chief Guest. He explained the illustrious works of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes for the tribes.
Speaking during the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. H. Venkateshwaralu said that tribal people in the country have fought an unparalleled struggle. The university will take initiative to bring this history to the people. There are still people in the community who deserve help and support. Efforts should be made to bring all sections of the people on the path of development to make a self-sufficient India a reality, he pointed out. He also explained that the University Mission for Health and Development has been formulated with this goal in mind. Registrar Dr. M.Muralidharan Nambiar, Vanavasi Vikasa Kendram State Joint Organizing Secretary A.Narayanan, Dr. Ajaykumar, and others spoke during the event. Dr. Anish Kumar T.K. welcomed the guests and Adv. Sukanya S. Sukumaran delivered vote of thanks. A discussion with the students was also held as part of the event.
