One-day Awareness Workshop on Clean Water and Sanitation Practices


The Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod in association with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) organised a one–day awareness workshop on ‘Investigating the Knowledge of Clean Water, Sanitation Practices and Perceptions Towards Microplastic Pollution among Coastal Villagers of Kerala’ on 22nd February 2024 at Nilgiri Guest House, Central University of Kerala as a part of research findings of the short-term empirical project. This collaborative event brings together Suchitwa Mission District Coordinators of Kerala, Panchayath Members, Village Extension Officers and resource persons from Kerala and shared their valuable insights on sanitation projects and future recommendations in Coastal villages. Project Director Prof. Muthukumar Muthuchamy welcomed the participants. Dr. S.Anbazhagi, Project Director, gave an insight into the workshop. The awareness workshop was inaugurated by Prof. K.C. Baiju, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor (i/c), Central University of Kerala. Chief Guest Shri. U.V. Jose IAS, Executive Director, Suchitwa Mission Kerala, joined the meeting through video conference. Dr. Sijin Kumar, Dean of School of Earth Sciences, Dr. Sudisha Jogaiah, Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Prof. Amruth G. Kumar, Dean, School of Education extended their sincere wishes for the success of the workshop. Dr. M. Nagalingam, Project Director, proposed vote of thanks. Following the inaugural session, Dr. Muhamed Hatha captivated the audience with a talk on the critical importance of clean drinking water. Field investigators presented their data on nine coastal villagers of Kerala highlighting the importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Clean Water and Sanitation Practices Waste Management and the pervasive issue of microplastics. An interactive session chaired by Prof. Amruth G. Kumar was carried out where the stakeholders discussed the problems in their respective districts and gave suggestions
