In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s #Plant4Mother campaign launched on World Environment Day, the Central University of Kerala has initiated a unique tree planting programme named 'Vidyavanam.' This initiative, dedicated to mothers, aims to promote afforestation and nature conservation on the university campus.
The 'Vidyavanam' project was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor (i/c), Prof. Vincent Mathew, who emphasized the university's commitment to various environmental conservation initiatives. He highlighted that the project is a testament to the institution's dedication to fostering a green and sustainable environment.
The programme, organized under the leadership of the Campus Development Committee in collaboration with the Social Forestry Division Kasaragod, Kerala Forest Department, involves planting 1,200 saplings, including medicinal plants and fruit trees, on a two-acre site near the faculty quarters. The saplings will be cared for by the faculty members, staff, and their families, each tree symbolically representing their mothers.
Dr. M. Muralidharan Nambiar, Registrar, presided over the event. Dr. R. Jayaprakash, Controller of Examinations; Shri. C.K. Aravindakshan, Gram Panchayat President; Smt. Shajna Kareem, Assistant Forest Conservator, Social Forestry Division Kasaragod; Dr. Tony Grace, Campus Development Officer; Sri. Solomon T. George, Range Forest Officer; and Sri. K. Girish, and Range Forest Officer, spoke on the occasion.
