National Seminar on Transforming Indian Education for a Sustainable Living System: Envisionings and Strategies

The Department of Education at the Central University of Kerala inaugurated a two-day national seminar on Transforming Indian Education for a Sustainable Living System: Envisionings and Strategies. Hon’ble Vice Chancellor (i/c) Prof. Vincent Mathew inaugurated the seminar. Prof. Saroj Sharma, former Chairperson of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and Dean of the School of Education at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, delivered the keynote address.

In her address, Prof. Saroj Sharma underscored the need to translate sustainability discussions into concrete actions, emphasizing that knowledge alone is insufficient without practical application. She advocated for localized sustainability efforts and highlighted Kerala’s rich Ayurvedic traditions as a model for harmonious living with nature.

Quoting philosopher John Dewey, Prof. Sharma described schools as "miniatures of society," stressing their role in preparing students to drive meaningful societal change. She emphasized the integration of moral values in education, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP), which promotes ethical responsibility alongside professional competence.

The seminar was presided over by Prof. Amruth G. Kumar, Dean Academic. Other distinguished speakers included Prof. Seema Dhavan (Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University), Prof. Jayaprakash R.K. (SCERT Director, Kerala), Prof. Mohamedunni Alias Musthafa, Prof. V.P. Joshith, and Dr. Mary Vineetha Thomas.
