Central University of Kerala Research Scholar Bags Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship


Ms. Ammoose K Jayan, Research Scholar, Department of Geology, Central University of Kerala has been awarded with the prestigious Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship (~INR 40 lakhs) for the year 2022-2023. In order to address the climate change issues in India and the US, the two countries have launched the Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship in September 2014, an initiative to advance bilateral cooperation on climate change. The fellowship has been named after the late Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and is part of a commitment made by the US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build long-term capacity to address climate change-related issues in both the countries. The fellowship will be operated by the binational US-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) under the umbrella of the prestigious Fulbright programme.

 

Ammoose K Jayan, hailing from Nattokom of Kottayam district is one of the three students selected from India. The fellowship would enable her to do research work at Arizona University, USA for a period of nine months. The research work would focus on Monsoon variability in India during the past 11,000 years with the help of sediment cores from Bay of Bengal. The study will also address the past changes in Bay of Bengal Coastal Currents (East India Coastal currents) during strong and weak phases of monsoons. The results will be helpful in predicting the future changes in Indian summer monsoon. Ammoose K Jayan is currently working under the supervision of Dr. Sijin Kumar AV for her Ph.D at Dept of Geology, Central University of Kerala.
