Central University of Kerala research team have obtained a patent for the design of Epilepsy predicting helmet. The research in automatic detection and prediction of epilepsy from EEG signals started in the year 2016 in the department of computer science, the Central University of Kerala by the team consisting of a research scholar Fasil O. K, Assistant professor Dr. Thasleema T. M under the guidance of Dr. Rajesh R, Head Department of Computer Science. The team has developed efficient algorithms for the analysis of epileptic EEG signals. The team also presented their works at various international conferences and published many scientific papers.
Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that affects a large population across the globe. Epilepsy will disturb the brain's normal functioning and create burdens in the day-to-day lives of patients. The patients who are driving vehicles or handling complicated machines have more risks. The dizziness and unconsciousness of epilepsy will lead to accidents and significant injuries. However, various medical treatments are available for epilepsy; 30% of epileptic cases are intractable. An alert system that alarms the occurrence of seizures by monitoring seizure episodes, duration, and severity will be a solution for patients to adopt appropriate precautions.
As an initial step, the team has developed the model of a "Brain signal capturing safety helmet" that captures the brain signals and predicts the chances of epilepsy well in advance. The team has now obtained a design patent for the model (Design number: 335166-001). This design will lead to the development of an alarm system that helps many drivers and can save many lives. The same model can also be used for sleep detection for drivers with few changes in algorithms.
